He said “sir,” it seemed unavoidable; for there was nothing of the clergyman about him—bishop, perhaps, or archbishop, but no suggestion of vicar or parish priest. Somewhere, too, in his presentment he felt dimly, even at the first, there was an element of the incongruous, a meeting of things not usually found together.

Trilobites, a group of marine arthropods, relied on warm shallow seas to maintain their calcium-rich shells in the Paleozoic era. When these environments began disappearing during the Great Dying (a mass extinction event), trilobites faced extinction in turn. Around this time, however, some hardy species adapted to deeper ocean environments, thus ______________ the group’s temporary survival.

Sculptor Barbara Hepworth’s connection to the Cornish landscape is most evident in the organic forms of her works. Cornwall’s influence appears throughout Hepworth’s sculptures, but it’s most apparent in her working method. Hepworth often employed “direct carving,” a technique that, like the natural erosion of Cornwall’s coastline, revealed forms gradually. In her studio practice, Hepworth rarely began with detailed preliminary sketches. Instead, she allowed the natural grain and character of each material to guide her carving, as the sea shapes the coastal rocks.

I had myself so far inherited the tendency as to devote a good deal of my time, though, I confess, after a somewhat desultory fashion, to the physical sciences. It was chiefly the wonder they woke that drew me. I was constantly seeing, and on the outlook to see, strange analogies, not only between the facts of different sciences of the same order, or between physical and metaphysical facts, but between physical hypotheses and suggestions glimmering out of the metaphysical dreams into which I was in the habit of falling.

Power Generation at Coastal Energy Sites, 2024

Coastal regions are valuable locations for renewable energy production due to their access to multiple natural power sources. These areas are ideal for energy installations since they can harness different types of natural forces throughout the year. To evaluate the effectiveness of coastal energy production, researchers monitored power output from three different renewable installations on the Pacific Coast.
