AP Macroeconomics Exam

AP Macroeconomics introduces students to the principles of economics that apply to the economy as a whole. The course focuses on broad economic concepts such as national income, inflation, unemployment, economic growth, and international trade and finance. It also explores the role of governments and central banks in managing economic performance through fiscal and monetary policy.

The AP Macroeconomics Exam is administered at the end of the school year and assesses all key topics covered in the course. Like AP Micro, it follows a hybrid digital format: the multiple choice section is completed on the Bluebook testing app, while the free response questions are displayed digitally but answered by hand in a paper exam booklet.

Content Categories

The exam lasts two hours and ten minutes and is split into two main sections:

1

Multiple Choice

You’ll have 1 hour and 10 minutes to answer 60 multiple choice questions, which make up 66% of your total score.

2

Free Response

You’ll have 1 hour to complete 3 free response questions—1 long question and 2 short questions—worth 33% of your total score.

A four-function calculator is allowed throughout the exam, and students are provided with a formula sheet to assist with key economic equations.

Macroeconomics requires a deep understanding of interconnected concepts and models—such as the aggregate demand and supply model, the Phillips Curve, and the loanable funds market—which can be especially challenging for students taking a combined AP Micro/Macro course. The key to success is regular practice and review of core concepts.

Use the six practice tests above to reinforce your understanding of all six official curriculum units. Each test is designed to reflect the structure and difficulty of the actual AP exam. With consistent practice, you’ll build the confidence and skills you need to earn a top score on test day!
