The PSAT Math Section
The Math section of the PSAT consists of 44 questions with a total time limit of 70 minutes. These questions are divided equally between two modules, with 22 questions and 35 minutes per module. Since the PSAT uses a multistage adaptive testing model, your performance on the first module will determine the content and difficulty of the second module.
The content of this section is categorized into four areas: Algebra, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, Advanced Math, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Unlike earlier versions of the test, the new digital PSAT allows the use of a calculator for all questions. However, test administrators recommend that you forgo calculator use for certain questions where it may not be the most efficient tool.
Most questions are multiple-choice, but some may require you to write in your answers. Approximately 30% of the math questions on the PSAT are “in-context questions”—word problems that present real-world scenarios requiring mathematical calculations.
With an average of 1 minute and 35 seconds per question, it’s important to practice pacing yourself. Use our free practice tests above to simulate the exam experience. These tests are designed to gradually increase in difficulty, helping you build the skills needed for success on test day.
Good luck with your studies, and best of luck on test day!
