AP Spanish Language & Culture — Exam & Course Overview

The AP Spanish Language & Culture course and exam measure students’ ability to communicate effectively in Spanish in real-world contexts. The emphasis is on meaningful communication and cultural understanding, not memorization of isolated grammar rules.

The exam evaluates performance across three modes of communication:

  • Interpretive (reading and listening)
  • Interpersonal (writing and speaking)
  • Presentational (writing and speaking)

The exam is approximately 3 hours long and includes both multiple-choice and free-response sections.

65 questions total

Part A: Reading

  • 30 questions in 40 minutes

Part B: Listening & Combined Sources

  • 35 questions in 55 minutes
  • Includes:
    • Audio-only sources (conversations, interviews, announcements)

1. Interpersonal Writing: Email Reply

  • 15 minutes
  • Respond to a prompt appropriately and completely
  • Evaluated on task completion, register, clarity, and language control

2. Presentational Writing: Argumentative Essay

  • 55 minutes
  • Write an essay using three sources:
    • Two written/visual sources
    • One audio source (played twice)
  • Requires a clear thesis and integration of evidence

3. Interpersonal Speaking: Simulated Conversation

  • Series of short spoken responses (about 20 seconds each)
  • Tests conversational ability and appropriateness in context

4. Presentational Speaking: Cultural Comparison

  • Preparation + recording time
  • Compare a cultural practice or perspective from a Spanish-speaking community with your own
  • Evaluated on organization, cultural insight, and spoken Spanish
