AP Environmental Science FRQ 2
Analyze an Environmental Problem and Propose a Solution
The scat-swallow river has a dam built to create a lake behind it and produce power for a nearby city. The water from the lake is used for the city and for surrounding agricultural fields.
(a) Identify one cultural service provided by the dam.
(b) Identify and Describe one ecological drawback of the dam.
(c) Identify an economic benefit of the dam.
(d) Describe the process of a dam turning the kinetic energy of flowing water into electricity.
Local ecologists have found that the dam is preventing the migration of salmon upstream to breed.
(e) Identify two ways that the migration of the salmon can be restored.
The agricultural fields around the river downstream of the dam are seeing a lot of runoffs back into the river leading to eutrophication of the wetlands at the mouth of the river where it empties into the ocean.
(f) Describe the process of eutrophication.
(g) Identify one way the farmers could reduce the runoff that causes eutrophication.
(h) Describe how the proposed solution from answer (g) would help reduce eutrophication.
