Building the Plaza de Toros
Thousands of tourists from all over the world gather in Seville, Spain each year, two weeks after Easter Holy Week. They come to witness La Real Maestranza, a major part of the Seville Fair, which began in 1847 and was originally organized as a livestock fair. 1 Among the activities featured in the festival are the bullfights that 2 took place in the Plaza de Toros, a circular ring on Baratillo Hill.
Construction on the stunning Plaza de Toros first 3 begun in 1749 but had not completed for many years after. The inner facade of the plaza (called the Palco del Príncipe or Prince’s Box) was completed in 1765, and this box consists of two 4 parts; the access gate through which the successful bullfighters 5 exited and the theater box itself, that was reserved for the exclusive use of members of the Spanish Royal Family. 6
(A) When monarch Carlos III banned bullfighting celebrations in 1786, work halted, even though only one-third of the plaza had been completed at the time. (B) The construction of the ring was finally completed in 1881; two-thirds were constructed in stone, the rest in wood. (C) This long construction period reflected Spain’s political turmoil during this era. (D) Despite using mixed materials, architects maintained design unity throughout the structure. (E) The wooden sections were strategically positioned in areas requiring less structural support while preserving the plaza’s overall aesthetic harmony. 7
8 Architect Anival Gonzalez replaced the stone grandstands between 1914 and 1915, redoing them in brick. All the rows were reconstructed with a smoother slope. Ten to twelve rows of shaded seating 9 were added, as well as fourteen rows in the sun and three rows of barriers. A row of armchairs was built in the superior part of the shaded area and placed in front of the theater boxes. 10
