The SAT Reading & Writing Section
The digital SAT Reading and Writing section tests your ability to understand written passages, analyze evidence, interpret vocabulary, and apply standard English grammar rules. The section includes 54 multiple-choice questions divided into two 32-minute modules, giving you a total of 64 minutes. Each question is based on a short passage or paired passages covering literature, history, science, or the humanities.
The SAT uses an adaptive testing format. Your performance on the first module determines the difficulty of the second module, which contains a mix of questions appropriate to your demonstrated skill level.
Every question falls into one of four broad categories:
01
Information and Ideas
02
Craft & Structure
03
Expression of Ideas
04
Standard English Conventions
Our six free SAT Reading and Writing practice tests offer a convenient way to review the skills tested on the digital SAT. Each test includes 10 multiple-choice questions covering a combination of reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing.
For the best results, try answering each question without assistance before checking the correct answers and explanations. Pay attention to the questions you miss and identify the skills that need additional practice.
You can also use these short quizzes for timed SAT practice. On the actual exam, you’ll have approximately 71 seconds per Reading and Writing question, so developing an efficient approach to reading passages and evaluating answer choices is important.
