The New SAT Essay

The new Digital SAT does not include an essay section. The essay portion of the SAT was optional and was removed from the traditional paper-based SAT in 2021. This change also applies to the digital version of the exam.

The Digital SAT focuses primarily on two main sections:

1. Reading and Writing (combined into one section with shorter, adaptive question sets).

2. Math (also adaptive).

The removal of the essay section has streamlined the test, making it shorter and more focused on core academic skills in reading, writing, and math. However, if a college you’re applying to still requires a writing sample, you may need to submit an essay through other means, such as college-specific writing prompts or an additional exam like the ACT.
